Buddhist Psychology: Clinical and Personal Applications

This two-day workshop is aimed at providing an opportunity to experience and understand the clinical and personal applications of mindfulness and four relationship qualities (loving kindness, compassion, appreciative joy and equanimity). It will involve presentations, interactive discussion, reflection, experiential exercises, mindful movement, possible case discussion and practice in meditation. Though theoretical frameworks will be presented the emphasis of both days will be experiential.

Learning outcomes Day 1

  • Understand the four foundations of mindfulness.
  • Learn about the four truths and the eight-fold path as frameworks.
  • Experience and learn about calm and insight meditation practices.
  • Engage in exercises related to using mindfulness to work with thoughts and unhelpful thinking patterns.
  • Engage in exercises related to taming destructive emotions and cultivating healing emotions.
  • Engage in interactive discussion in order to better understand clinical and personal applications of mindfulness.

Learning outcomes Day 2

  • Clarify the four heart qualities as meditation practices and how they can be used clinical. 
  • Learn about the three emotional systems of 1/threat, 2/resource seeking and 3/ soothing connection and their relationship to the cultivation of compassion and loving kindness. 
  • Practice meditation on one or more of the four heart qualities (loving kindness, compassion, appreciative joy and equanimity).
  • Understand the relationship between H.E.A.L. as described by Rick Hanson and Buddhist serenity meditation practices. 
  • Engage in discussion to clarify all of the above.

Registration

Participants can attend both or one of either of the two days. Day 1 will focus on mindfulness and Day 2 will focus on mindful compassion involving loving kindness, compassion, appreciative joy and equanimity.

About the presenter

Mal Huxter (MAPS, AABCAP) is a clinical psychologist in private practice. He is the author of “Healing the heart and mind with mindfulness. Ancient path, present moment” , Routledge 2016. He has been teaching mindfulness and the four heart qualities to the general public, different cultures, clinical populations, therapists and other professionals since 1991. He is a teacher of MSC and CEB and trained in a range of therapies including CFT. He began training in Buddhist meditation practices in 1975, living in Thailand as a Buddhist monk for two years in the late 1970’s. For more info about Mal go to: www.malhuxter.com
